MaleAbout the Provider
Dr. Samuel Dotson is board certified in adult psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. He then completed his psychiatry residency at the combined Massachusetts General and McLean Hospital program at Harvard Medical School, where he served as a chief resident.
Dr. Dotson is a strong proponent of evidence-based psychiatry, which means that he seeks to combine the latest clinical research with a patient-centered approach. In addition to the biomedical perspective, he also values interventions that prioritize the psychological, social and spiritual aspects of suffering and healing. His training included a strong emphasis on psychotherapy, so talk therapy works its way into all his visits. He never sees his time with patients as just “medication management.” His primary therapeutic modality is person-centered therapy, which is an approach grounded in humanistic psychology. He occasionally will also draw on his training in psychodynamic, meaning-centered existential and cognitive-behavioral therapies.
In addition to his clinical care, Dr. Dotson enjoys teaching psychiatry residents, medical students and nurse practitioners. He is the associate program director for the adult psychiatry residency program at NGHS, and he is an adjunct faculty member with the psychosis program at the Emory School of Medicine.
Dr. Dotson is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, and moved to northeast Georgia to be closer to family. When he’s not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, biking, hiking and backpacking through National Parks.
